Letter to the Editor: President Bradley responds to call to denounce Dutchess jail

You requested that I make a public statement denouncing the construction of the new Dutchess County jail. I agree that we have many problems in the criminal justice system, of which jails are a part, and that restorative justice models provide strong counterpoints to systems that focus on punishment. From what I have been told, however, there are complexities to the proposed plan and I do not feel I can make a statement in opposition to or in support of it.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful regarding your request. I remain supportive of our Prison Studies program and other educational efforts to help people transition out of prison, as Vassar is well-equipped to help in those ways.
